Our Temple Gardens project, which provides nine new homes arranged around an existing Grade II listed pub, and new overnight letting rooms, won the RIBA South West Award 2018.

A further string to our bow came as Kyle Buchanan, Archio’s co-director, was presented with the RIBA South West Project Architect of the Year Award 2018.

Temple Gardens is a series of new homes and guest rooms that have been designed to respond to their historic Somerset setting. These distinctly contemporary buildings feature materials and forms that riff off the local vernacular, sometimes completing the village backdrop and at times standing boldly alongside their surroundings.

Three new buildings join the existing pub and refurbished barn house, defined by pitched roofs and robust window surrounds, forming a modern addition to a sensitive site.

Kyle Buchanan, Director at Archio, said: “We were absolutely delighted to receive these prestigious RIBA awards. We’ve worked collaboratively both within our practice and with our partners to bring this project to life, and these awards are testament to everyone’s hard work and determination.

“Adding contemporary buildings to such a sensitive rural site is incredibly difficult but we engaged in a number of rounds of pre-planning consultation with the local planning authority and received strong support for our proposals. The Temple Inn previously sat on the edge of the village, however the new development envelops it with housing, reinvigorating the pub and allowing it to become integrated into the life of Temple Cloud once again.”
